Sarah & Ethan are possibly one of the most relaxed wedding couples I’ve had the honor of photographing! They had a beautiful ceremony under the trees at Arbor Crest Winery, with not a dry eye in the crowd, followed by an epic dance party reception as the sun set over Spokane. We couldn’t have asked for better weather, and I had such a wonderful time photographing their sweet wedding!
Sarah & Ethan, thank you for having me along to capture your wedding day. I am so happy to have met you both, and to have been part of your wedding!!
For a few years, weddings were getting bigger and bigger. More people in the wedding party, more guests, larger venues. But lately, I’ve seen a return of the backyard wedding. Smaller weddings, at a location that is personal, and it’s been fun to see the changes. I love big weddings, and I love small weddings too.
Korey & Steven were married in a family member’s backyard, under and arch built by another family member. They had a small, fall ceremony, surrounded by friends and family. I chatted with Korey quite a bit through email and by phone before the wedding, but we didn’t get a chance to meet until the wedding day. It was such a joy to meet you, Korey & Steven. Thank you for including me in your wedding day!
When Annie walked up to me at the Bridal Show last year, I knew I liked her. And then, I got to sit down with both Annie & Zach a few days later, and I had the best time. Annie and Zach had a clear idea of what they wanted from their wedding – something small and casual – and their wedding was perfectly that. They rented a cabin on Lake Coeur d’Alene, the groom arrived by paddle boat while singing The Final Countdown, and hired Patty’s Tacos to come out and cater the dinner, which was amazing. Even when it threatened to rain, and the taco truck was late because of mechanical problems, Annie & Zach just went with it. There was no stress, just lots of friends and family and love.
Annie & Zach, thank you so much for trusting me with your wedding, for making me laugh and cry with your beautiful vows. It’s been so wonderful to get to know you both, and to meet your lovely families. <3
On the morning of Lizz & Ken‘s wedding, I ran out and grabbed a couple extra umbrellas. The clouds were getting thick, and I knew they had a large wedding party. I figured it was better to be prepared, plus I had no idea what the weather was like in Sagle (which, if you didn’t know, is on the other side of the bridge from Sandpoint), because we’d had such a crazy summer. In the end, we didn’t use those umbrellas really at all, because by the time the wedding started, the smoke, the clouds, and the crazy weather had blown away. All that was left was blue skies, and a groom waiting to see his beautiful bride.
Lizz & Ken were married in the backyard of Lizz’s parents’ house, surrounded by the people they love, and beautiful scenery. Lizz said it best in her vows: that she was getting married on that day, and no rain, or smoke, or wind could stop this wedding. She just didn’t realize that it was all going to happen at the same time!
While the weather caused everyone a little stress (and moved the reception inside), it ended up being a beautiful day, and the only tears that were shed were happy ones. Lizz and Ken, thank you so very much for having me along for your wedding. I wish you all the best!!

If you didn’t catch part one, Veronica & Tom’s portrait session, I suggest you check it out now. ;)
When I first met with Veronica & Tom last year, we bonded more or less immediately over travel stories and our mutual love for Harry Potter. They told me about their dream to throw a wedding that was a little bit Southern, since they met in Tom’s home state of Virginia, but mostly a casual, elegant, garden party wedding. And when I walked into the garden on their wedding day, it was exactly as they described it to me almost a year earlier. There were moments when I felt like I had stepped into a Jane Austen novel. It was a casual, candid, joyful wedding and every single person I chatted with had wonderful things to say about Tom & Veronica.
One thing I want to point out: Veronica & Tom hand picked a wonderful group of people to take care of them on their wedding day, and it was fantastic to be a part of that group of people. It was wonderful, because each and every person was great at what they did. Alyssa, at Belle Journee Events, not only coordinated the day effortlessly, but also ran and grabbed my sweater out of *my* car for me when I realized I left it there and was getting cold during the toasts, because she knew I’d need it. I’d go on and on about every person there, but instead, trust me when I say they were all amazing, and check them all out at the bottom of the post!
Veronica & Tom, thank you for having me along, it was such an joy getting to know you, your families, and your friends!
Funny story. I usually ask each member of the wedding party to take an individual photo with the bride or groom, so they have something fun together. Usually we take one nice, posed, photo – like the one on the left – and then something a little more casual. Sometimes they’re silly, sometimes it’s just a hug, or big grins. This bridesmaid leaned in and gave Veronica a big kiss on the cheek. And then realized…she was wearing lipstick and had given her a good lip print! All was well, the lipstick came off, and this photo on the right was the moment when they both realized what happened. :)
