Recently I’ve started working with more small businesses and entrepreneurs, and y’all, I really love it! There is something so great about being able to help another person make their business or dreams come true by creating beautiful photos for them. Melissa emailed me last summer (don’t these beautiful blooms have you dreaming of summer? Gosh, I can’t wait!) about doing some head shots because she was writing a book, and she needed a bio photo for the book and for all her launches. We met up for a quick little head shot session, and she now has a bunch of beautiful, natural, photos to use for her branding. Branding and head shot sessions can be as little as 20 minutes, or we can work for a full day.
Oh, and Melissa’s book, Who Will Love Me? on available on Amazon.
I feel like I need to confess something to you…it’s a bit embarrassing.
A few weeks ago, I was at a networking thing, chatting up another wedding vendor. We’d never met before, and when we exchanged names, she said something that made me stop and swear mentally. What did she say to me?
“Oh! I follow you online, but I didn’t recognize you. You look a lot different from your profile photos.”
Why did that make me stop? Because I realized then that all my profile photos – on all my social media platforms and my website too – are old. Some of them are really old. Like, not just before I had a kid, but before I bought a house and moved to Spokane and oh, so old. Or, even worse, they’re selfies or random vacation phone snaps. I love each and every photo, but do they shout out I’m a professional, hire me? Eh, not really.
So, when I had the chance to help shoot this great event with ABC Northwest and Devout Beauty Exposed, I jumped on it. I’m still trying to figure out how I’m going to shoot my own head shots (uh, I’m not, but I am planning to have mine done soon too), so instead I’ll be rocking my camera for you all day on May 9th. These are a CRAZY deal we came up with, at just $125.00 for the session. That is early bird pricing, so snag it before the sessions fill up. You’re going to get hair and makeup styling from Lindsey and her team at Devout, and then you’ll get some one on one time with me to get beautiful head shots done. You’ll be amazed at the magic we can work in just 15 minutes. A week later, you’re going to get a folder of web sized images so you can post them on all your social media feeds. One high resolution file is included, so snag your favorite for that time you get a print feature or your business cards. Or, if you love them all (you will, you’re fabulous), I’m offering the high resolution files from these sessions at a crazy low rate.
While you won’t have an awesome glass wall as a background like Dustin did during his shoot in Portland, we’ll be offering a classic white background and something a bit more fun for our attendees, along with a few other things I’m not quite ready to share yet.

Robyn is the force behind Red Letter Event Planning, one of the many fantastic wedding and event planners in the Inland Northwest. She was the talent behind our gorgeous Sophistication on the River Styled Shoot last summer, and I look up to her as a businesswoman and friend. Earlier this year, we talked about getting her some new head shots, since she got a beautiful new website. We did them out at her home in Coeur d’Alene, which gave me the added benefit of getting to snuggle her sweet dog, Snickers, who was much better behaved for the camera than my own pup!! Robyn had her makeup done by Evelyn Mauro, and I think if you’re getting new head shots done, you should invest in having your hair and makeup done too, because then you’re going to feel amazing. Evy did a fantastic job, and Robyn’s makeup was beautiful and consistent with her everyday look.
It’s a great feeling to help a fellow creative entrepreneur hone in their brand by providing them with beautiful photos. If you’re looking for photos for your website, your business, or your online dating profile, contact me today!
A couple years ago, I attended the WDS Conference in Portland. Since then, I’ve photographed quite a few participants at the conference, and around the Pacific Northwest. I really enjoy weddings, but there is something so great about working with a single client, and really helping them develop their brand through high quality photos. Here are a few of my favorites from a trip down to Portland in August.
If you’re interested in having me photograph you – or your company – drop me a message through the contact form. I’d love to talk about what we can create together!
My 2016 sessions have now passed. Thank you to everyone who came out this year. If you’d like to be the first to get information on portrait & mini sessions in 2017, please sign up here. You can also request information by emailing me through the contact form.
We’re less than a week away from September, and I know you’re trying to squeeze everything in to the last few days of summer, but I’m about to talk about fall sessions. The Emily Wenzel Photography holiday sessions are one of my favorite things, it’s always so fun to see so many of you and kickoff the fall & winter season with these sessions! Due to our big news, sessions will be taking place in October this year, instead of November and December like years past. So, grab your favorite fall sweaters – or Halloween costumes – and cross your Christmas photos off the list before we hit freezing temps for Love & Monsters in the Leaves. Please join me at a beautiful, Spokane location, surrounded by all the fall colors the Inland Northwest provides. I’ll have a few blankets and other small things that will make for great photos and memories! Anyone is welcome to sign up for a holiday shoot, whether it’s just you, your whole family, only the kids, you and your love, or a bunch of your friends! These sessions may not be the best idea for large families, since we’ll be moving quite quickly.
– At a location in the greater Spokane area.
– 30 minute session
– 7 digital images delivered through an online gallery with a print release
– $150 plus sales tax ($163.05 total)
You will receive your edited images approximately 10 days after your session, and no later than 2 weeks. There will be around 20-30 images for you to choose from. 7 images are included in your session, and additional can be purchased a la carte. The best part of doing these early? You’ll have plenty of time to get your Christmas cards ordered! Here are the dates and times available:
Saturday, October 15th
Friday, October 21st
Sunday, October 30th
Please reserve your time slot here! Spots will go fast, and are scheduled on a first come first serve basis. I will do my best to accommodate everyone, but space is limited. The session fee is non-refundable and is required to hold your spot – if you need to cancel, you can apply your deposit towards a session at a later time. Once we confirm a time slot I will email you with further details; I will need your deposit within 24 hours of confirming your date or else your time slot will be made available again for someone else.
I am looking forward to spreading some holiday cheer and capturing the joy of the season in your family! If you’ve got any questions, feel free to send me a message through the contact form.
A few months ago, I had the chance to do some head shots for Kelly, the lovely lady behind Creatively Yours Photography. I realized then, that it’s been a long time since I’ve had mine done. When I did the math and realized it had been four years — yikes! — I knew I should blog about head shots.
I get it, it’s hard to make time, and to figure out what you want your head shot to say about you. Your head shot is often the first impression people get of you. You don’t want it to be a random cell phone photo or one where you’re cropping the [bride – groom – wedding party ] out of the last professional photo you got, but you’re still in a pink dress (although you never wear pink). You want to look sharp, trustworthy, like the kind of person that get things done. Your photo is going to give a first impression even before they read your witty and perfect about me page.
If you’re in the creative world, it can be tempting to throw the idea of a professional head shot out the window. After all, you’re an artist! Your face doesn’t need to even be on the internet! Your work speaks for itself! Don’t think I haven’t had those conversations with myself. I panic about figuring out what to wear when I’m in front of the camera. I’ve debated not having a photo on my website. Then I realized: other people don’t think the way I do. That’s just the way the world works. I need a head shot on my website. But how often should you get head shots? And what kind of head shots do you need?
Five reasons to get a new head shot:
It’s been a while.
— A basic reason, but if your head shots are more than a year old, you need a new head shot. You could push that to every two years, but really, don’t be like me and wait until they are four years old. Aim for every year, and if it takes two years, well, sadly, that’s how life works sometimes.
You’ve changed your look.
— Head shots should be current, and you should look like the person who is in the photo. So if you have cut your hair, grown a beard, have constantly changing hair color, or you’ve gained or lost more than 10 lbs, you need a new head shot.
You have to look the part.
— I love the photo of me that I used to have on my about page. It’s me, in Alaska, standing in front of a glacier. But while that screams “world traveler!” it doesn’t scream “professional photographer”. You need to look like a professional.
It makes you stand out.
— Just like having a great product, if your website and social media platforms look professional – which a head shot can help do – you’re going to stand out from the crowd.
You have five seconds.
— We are skimming everything – even this – and because of that, our attention span has gotten shorter and shorter. You’ve got just a few seconds to catch someone’s attention, and make them want to book you. A professional image is going to make them stop and pay attention.
Who needs head shots? Many people don’t think they need professional head shots. But if you’re a small business owner, you need a professional head shot. If you work in the wedding industry, 100% you need a head shot. If you’re looking for a new job — get those head shots done and get them up on your Linked In profile! If you’ve got an online dating profile, let’s get some more casual, I’m cool, I just don’t like picking up people in bars, kind of head shots. Basically: if you’re on the web in a professional capacity at all, you need a head shot.
Ready to update your head shot? I’m booking sessions right now for head shots, and I’d love to add you to my schedule. You can contact me through the link above, or shoot me an email: firstname.lastname@example.org. Let’s make your business awesome! <3
